My mother had a major stroke 2 years ago and since then has suffered from extreme neck pain caused by contraction of her SCM and Traps along with other neck muscles. We stretch her neck and apply Lidoderm and Flector patches on the areas where she feels the most benefit. The stroke affected her left side but also caused right side weakness because she herniated and has brain stem damage. We have tried tons of PO meds including pain killers, muscle relaxers, and nerve pain meds like Lyrica. No PO med does much for her other than cause some decrease in mental status but no relief. We have tried Botox injections and trigger point coupled with a steroid and lidocaine. She also had esn injections? where they did epidural injections of steroids and tried the tens unit for e-stem and have tried even capsasin and bio freeze with very little relief from those. Any kinda of help would be super appreciated I just hate to watch her suffer and when I saw this page I was ecstatic because maybe some one out there has tried something that works.

  5. Hi, Nav.
I thank you for all the time and information you gave me this evening on the phone! You were very kind and extraordinarily helpful! I hope now that I will get permanent relief from the neck pain I’ve been experiencing. I need to spend a lot of time at the computer, and can’t afford to allow the neck pain I’m experiencing to continue.
I absolutely agree with you that neck pain and other body pains should not be something to “live with” and to take OTC pain relievers for. As you know, not only do such drugs not solve the problem, but they cause serious internal problems over time with the kidneys, the stomach and other organs.
I have had excellent success solving other problems I’ve had by eliminating the cause, rather than taking drugs. For instance, several years ago, I had terrible heartburn, or “GERD,” as the MD’s now like to call it. I did take “Prilosec” for a short time, but only till I could find out how to get rid of the problem naturally. A book I read said to eat sauerkraut, to drink raw goat’s milk, and do some other things, and within just a day or two, the heartburn was gone, never to return again.
Also, I was diagnosed with cancer in 1989, and have lived 21 years because I took control of my own treatment. In fact, I expect to live out a normal lifespan!
I will report back to you how the things you suggested I do work for me. I am looking forward to being pain-free soon!
    Very best wishes,
    Elliot

  6. I am 41 and have had neck pain since Jan 09 after doing a yoga shoulderstand with no arms and I think I held it too long before going into the bridge. After that I felt a sharp pain in the left side of my neck and 10 days of upper shoulder stiffness but no sign of any neck problem. About 10 days later, not realising I might have seriously injured my neck I had a deep tissue massage as the pain was very severe following carrying a small back-pack. I really regret that decision. Immediately after the pain in my left shoulder-blade area was much worse, with tingling and numbness in my left little finger. I was subsequently diagnosed with a C8 radiculopathy 3 months following the injury. The electrophysiology tests confirmed previous injury to C8 nerve root (change consistent with old injury, but all peripheral nerves functioning normally on the test). MRI at the 3 month stage only showed mild degenerative changes in my mid C- spine, no sign of nerve root compression. The neurosurgeon told me there had probably been a disc prolapse a the C8 level which had by now atrophied and that was why it didn’t show on the MRI scan. My neck might have been weakened by long hours of bending in my job. I have since tried physio, sports physio and seen an osteopath, chiropracter and had acupuncture for 6 sessions. The most helpful treatment I found was acupuncture. I tend to have a few weeks without too much pain or stiffness, followed by a flare-up of pain mainly in the left shoulder-blade area and stiffness in my left trapezius. The chronic neck pain really gets me down. The things that make it worse are lying on my left (can’t do this even for seconds), carrying small backpack and using the wrong pillow. The memory foam orthopaedic pillow with a lip really helps. Working with the sports physio it was discovered I had weakness of my left serratus anterior and difficult lifting objects with the left arm. I have since really strengthened the muscles to the point I can now do 10 full push-ups and have excellent flexibility and full range of movement of my neck. Yet frustratingly the pain continues. I did try amitriptyline which helped but have since stopped it because of the side effects. I cannot understand why I am still in chronic pain and I am filled with regret and sadness as I realise I may have to live with this pain for the rest of my life. I am really looking for natural therapies and did wonder about meditation and the role of neuroplasticity to affect the way my brain is perceiving the pain. I am really confused as to why I cannot lie on my left hand side, as I haven’t come across this with anyone else who has a neck problem. Is there any hope at all that I will be cured of this some day?

I hope you can help me I have 3 bulging disks in my neck, back of my head, pains in my shoulder and down my arms, Have tried many pillows that say they will help with neck pain none of them do. I also go to physical therapy I do mild taction and exercises to try to relieve some of the pain. My question for you is what pillow would you suggest.
